Few fisheries reward an angler quite like a hot perch bite on Long Point Bay. Lake Erie grows jumbo yellow perch in remarkable numbers, and a day spent over the right school can fill a cooler with the best-eating fish in fresh water. Here is how to find them, rig for them, and make the most of a Long Point perch fishing trip.
Find the school first
Perch are schooling fish, and 90% of success is location. Focus on the Outer Bay in 25 to 45 feet of water, over sand and scattered gravel. Use your sonar to idle until you mark dense clouds of fish near bottom, then drop a marker buoy or hold position with the trolling motor. If you are not getting bites in a few minutes, move — perch schools are nomadic, and the fish that are feeding are worth chasing.
Rig for jumbos
The classic perch rig — a tandem-hook spreader or crappie rig with small hooks — tipped with live minnows or worms is hard to beat. Keep it simple:
- A light to medium-light spinning rod and reel for bite detection
- A 1–2 oz bell sinker to hold bottom in current and wind
- Small, sharp hooks and a few pre-tied perch rigs
- A bait bucket of lively emerald shiners or minnows
Tip the hooks, drop to bottom, lift a few inches, and hold. When you feel the tap, reel steadily — perch have soft mouths.
Boat control and bait management
Anchor or spot-lock directly over the school. Keep your minnows cool and fresh; perch want a lively bait. When the bite slows, try a small jig tipped with a minnow head, or add a coloured bead or spinner blade above the hook for extra attraction.
Handle and store your catch

A passing cold front can scatter a school, so fish the settled days when you can.
